"A game of 3 halves!"
The Grade A Swiss Singles final was played last Friday between Andrew James ( 40.2) and John Savage (37.6) both undefeated after a several hard fort elimination rounds.
The opening games of this first set went with serve or with the narrow handicap advantage the final was being played off. This was overturned in the 5th and following games as John hit some well placed backhand winners and took the 1st set.
The opening of second set again went with serve or handicap but Andrew altered tactics with some heavily weighed shots which forced errors or hit targets and resulted in a string of games. Some unplayable volley winners meant the match momentum had swung his way as he closed out the 2nd set.
The final set break through came in the 3rd game as John got to grips with a number of forces playing them back into winning positions and a gap opened in the score line. The momentum had shifted back and John with most of the serve and played with increasing confidence closed out the match.
